IRD Explore
Graphical interface for the IRD's scientific resources platform

Operating in more than fifty countries, the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) produces thousands of articles, datasets, reports, field surveys and audiovisual material every year. Until now, this content has been scattered in heterogeneous warehouses, making it difficult to consult, cross-reference and exploit. The IRD asked probabl, an open source artificial intelligence solutions editor and integrator, and reciproque to design an internal platform capable of aggregating, indexing and linking all these scientific resources.
reciproque led co-design workshops bringing together researchers, documentalists and partners to map user paths, define personas and prioritise use cases: full-text search, thematic exploration, multiple filters.

The agency then drew up high-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes for a responsive interface complying with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, before delivering a complete design system and detailed front-end specifications for developers: reusable components, best integration practices and usability test sets.
These foundations made it possible to merge several isolated databases and to put more than 1.2 million interconnected records online right from the start, using a federated search engine enhanced with semantic suggestions and faceted filters.
The IRD now has a strategic tool that facilitates the circulation of knowledge, stimulates collaboration and embodies its mission: open science that is useful to as many people as possible.
